Understanding Configuration Manager 2012 R2 Site Types

It doesn’t take long when working with any of the versions of Systems Management Server or Configuration Manager to be introduced to the concept of a site server. Site servers exist to provide service to Configuration Manager clients. Site servers understand which clients they should serve by defining management boundaries, which may be AD sites, IP subnets, or IP address ranges. Depending on the size and organization of the Configuration Manager environment, there may be a need to have more than a single site to manage all of the clients in the enterprise. When more than one site is needed, it is common to establish a site hierarchy, which will facilitate centralized management of all Configuration Manager clients.

A specific design goal of Configuration Manager 2012 R2 is to reduce the number of sites that are needed in a hierarchy and also to reduce complexity. Further discussion of this will come shortly.

Site servers historically have fallen into one of two categories, either a primary site server or a secondary site server, and now a third type is part of Configuration Manager 2012 R2, the Central Administration Site (CAS).
