Software Requirements for installing a site server

Before further discussing Configuration Manager 2012 R2 it is beneficial to install the software. There are a few prerequisites for installing a site server. For a full list of these prerequisites, go to

http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/gg682077.aspx

These prerequisites may also apply to site systems that may be installed, depending on the services, those servers will offer:

◆ All site servers must be members of a Windows Active Directory domain (Windows Server 2003 functional level or above if using the discovery filter for stale computer records).
◆ The site servers must be deployed on 64-bit hardware. Configuration Manager 2012 R2 is a native 64-bit application, and there is no version that can be installed on 32-bit systems. (32-bit systems are supported as Configuration Manager clients and some site systems.)
◆ .NET Framework 3.5 SP1 and 4.0 must be installed.
◆ Microsoft XML Core Services 6.0 or greater must be installed.
◆ Microsoft Remote Differential Compression must be installed.
◆ SQL Server 2008, 2008 R2, or 2012 is required to host the ConfigMgr database.

And don’t worry; if a required configuration happens to be missed along the way, the Configuration Manager 2012 R2 prerequisite checker, which runs as part of the install wizard, will let you know. The details of the checks that are performed during prerequisite validation are recorded in the ConfigMgrPrereq.log, located in the root of the C: drive of the server where Configuration Manager 2012 R2 is being installed. If it would be helpful to run the prerequisite checker outside of the Configuration Manager 2012 R2 setup wizard, it is available as a separate executable located in the \SMSSETUP\BIN\X64 folder of the installation media.

The filename is PREREQCHK.EXE. The following list documents the prerequisite checks that are done as part of the install or as part of independently running the Prerequisite Wizard. The list of prerequisite checks is detailed for the Central Administration Site. Any additional checks performed are detailed for other site types.
