Primary Site Server

A primary site server has historically been identified as having a few
characteristics:
◆ It has its own database hosted on SQL Server to maintain configurations.
◆ It is the only site type where clients can be directly assigned.
◆ It has the ability to host child sites—either other primary sites or secondary sites.
Both the first and last characteristics are no longer items that distinguish a primary site. In
Configuration Manager 2012 R2 primary site servers do still have their own copy of SQL running,
but secondary sites do as well. Further, a primary site can have child sites, but those
child sites can only be secondary sites. Introduced in Configuration Manager 2012 R2 is the
fact that only primary sites can be assigned to the Central Administration Site—secondaries
need not apply!
