Every Configuration Manager 2012 R2 implementation will have at least one server running the site database server role. The simplest implementation will have a single server running all the Configuration Manager 2012 R2 roles as well as Microsoft SQL Server 2008 Service Pack 1 or higher. As noted earlier, at least one database repository is required to store all the client information and site configurations.
A Configuration Manager 2012 R2 site database server requires the following:
◆ All site servers must be members of a Windows 2003 or higher Active Directory domain.
◆ Microsoft SQL Server 2008 Service Pack 1 or higher is the only version of SQL Server supported for hosting the Configuration Manager 2012 R2 database. (There may also be Cumulative Update requirements; for the latest list, check the TechNet documentation.)
◆ The SQL database service is the only SQL Server component required to be installed to host the site database.
